Contrary to his family’s expectations, Karol Śliwka leaves the countryside and begins studying art in Warsaw. He decides to pursue graphic design. His works fill communist Poland and define the country’s visual landscape. His designs are not displayed in galleries, but are present in Polish homes, on Polish streets, in institutions, and in workplaces. At the same time, he leads an ordinary family life, which he passionately documents over the years. This extraordinarily talented artist is still considered one of the world’s most important sign designers.
The film “Mr. Śliwka’s Signs” is a kaleidoscope of archival footage and memories that reveal a fascinating portrait of a man and an era—a journey through a changing Poland. The filmmakers drew on unique archival materials and private video recordings that the subject had been capturing for years. (Awareness Foundation)
The film is available with English subtitles.
