KOMEDA: A PERSONAL PORTRAIT, dir. Igor Mertyn
An intimate portrait of a Polish jazz legend and a unique story about Krzysztof Komeda—an icon of the genre, a pianist and composer whose music won the hearts of listeners around the world and “opened the doors to Hollywood” for him. “Komeda: A Personal Portrait,” however, is more than just a biographical film. It is a personal journey into memories, guided by Tomek Lach—Komeda’s stepson. He embarks on a symbolic journey from Warsaw to Ustronie Morskie—the place where the artist’s musical story began in 1952. The film, shot using the “found footage” technique, combines as many as 67 fragments of archival material with contemporary footage, creating a mosaic-like story about a flesh-and-blood man—an artist, a stepfather, and a husband. It is a story not only about music, but also about difficult family relationships, growing up in the shadow of a great artist, and forging a bond with a man full of contradictions and mysteries. “Komeda: A Personal Journey” is not just an ordinary travelogue—it is a moving journey through time, emotions, and sounds that have shaped successive generations of jazz lovers.
